About this app

The Osteoporosis Knowledge app trains the understanding of the DVO osteoporosis guidelines (long version) and provides information on the risk of bone fractures in osteoporosis using exemplary cases.

Training tool for doctors
Doctors can use the app to check and train their knowledge of the osteoporosis guidelines as well as their skills in assessing the risk of suffering an osteoporosis-related bone fracture in accordance with the guidelines. To do this, they compare the fracture risk for a patient, which they have precisely calculated based on the osteoporosis guidelines (paper version), with the risk assessment created as an example by the app.
The app uses exemplary cases to calculate the risk of suffering a bone fracture caused by osteoporosis within the next 3 years. For this purpose, parameters are used as examples for the calculation. These parameters can be varied by the user in order to recognize their effects on the result and to be able to better assess which parameters are particularly relevant.
The app supports doctors in continually improving their specialist knowledge and thus optimizing the care of their patients. That's why you can access the current version of the osteoporosis guidelines from the app at any time in order to delve deeper into the topic.

Use by other health professionals and laypeople
The app is also suitable for interested laypeople and other health professionals such as nurses and physiotherapists. Here it is primarily used to assess a first impression of the risk, whether personally or in a circle of friends, of suffering a bone fracture caused by osteoporosis.
The information gained can then be used to specifically seek a conversation with the treating doctor. Your doctor will then precisely determine your individual fracture risk based on the osteoporosis guidelines and discuss further diagnostic and therapeutic measures with you.

Application limitation
The app is used for medical training and to review existing specialist knowledge on guideline-based diagnostics and therapy for osteoporosis. The app does not make a diagnosis or recommend treatment or provide decision support (neither for doctors nor for patients).
The information contained in the app is provided without any guarantee and is intended exclusively for personal use. The app does not replace a medical examination and advice or a well-founded medical therapy concept drawn up in accordance with guidelines.
For this exclusively exemplary risk calculation, the parameters published in the S3 guideline "Prophylaxis, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and in men aged 50 and over" 2023 are queried and the fracture risk is estimated according to the algorithms named in the guideline.
The risk assessment obtained in the app's case studies should be compared with the results calculated for each individual patient using the osteoporosis guideline, because only this individually created risk calculation and the doctor's specialist knowledge form the basis for the decisions to be made together with the patient regarding further diagnostics and therapy. This app cannot and does not intend to replace this.
The extensive 440-page guideline is available on the AWMF website at the following link: https://register.awmf.org/de/leitlinien/detail/183-001.
The calculator does not provide any recommendations for diagnostics, therapy or behavior change. Such questions should be discussed with a doctor.
